History

Community Arts North West was launched on 23 October 1978 as Community Arts Mobile Workshop Team (North West) Ltd as a co-operative.

The organisation was founded to:

“…advance education and provide facilities in the interests of social welfare with the object of improving conditions of life for the said inhabitants (of particular areas of the North West).”

The organisation’s mission was to:

“…present, promote, organise, provide, manage and produce literary, musical, dramatic and artistic entertainments, performances and exhibitions as are conducive to the promotion, maintenance and advancement of education or to the encouragement of the Arts.”

This commitment continues to this day, and CAN remains one of the leading participatory arts organisations regionally, nationally and internationally.

The company became Community Arts North West (CAN) in 1995.

We’ll be updating this area with CAN’s rich history over the coming months.
