Children’s creativity for social action

Bury’s Primary Schools connected through social action on climate change

CAN has been working in partnership with Bury Council CLAS on The School’s Linking Project since 2019.  Through the project, CAN has worked with approximately 360 children and their teachers each year.

Between February and July 2022, as part of this unique partnership, CAN designed and delivered a programme of creative workshops with a cohort of 12 classes from 10 primary schools across the borough of Bury.

CAN engaged the visual artist Mandy Beck McKim to develop and deliver creative workshops to inspire and connect children. Mandy created activities to support primary school classes to explore social action and be part of worldwide action against climate change.

Children created giant badges on wooden discs using collage and drawing.  The discs were designed to interlock to demonstrate how our action is stronger when we work together.

The project is part of the wider Schools Linking Network a charity based in Bradford which is:

“striving to develop and deepen young people’s knowledge and understanding of identity, diversity, equality and community, creating space for discussion of these issues within the school curriculum and supporting teachers to address them”

Teachers were delighted with the creative outputs from the project.

“Just wanted to say how much we enjoyed our workshop yesterday; the work produced by the children was fantastic!”

“…the artwork that they produced is amazing!”

“The children will be pleased to know their work is on display in a museum!”
