TANDEM International Programme – Vrolijheid CAN Co-Create
CAN have produced a new creative-digital programme in 2016/17 with national/international reach via the TANDEM programme (initiative of the European Cultural Foundation and MitOst e.V.), an exchange programme that assists cultural organisations in developing long-term working relationships, knowledge development and networking opportunities with project partners from Europe and beyond.
The aim of TANDEM is to connect and inspire cultural managers by supporting sharing of knowledge and experience across geographical and cultural borders. Supported through this initiative, CAN’s partnership with Netherlands based Stichting de Vrolijkheid (Amsterdam) explores co-creation within the arts in an inter-cultural setting with people with a refugee or migrant background. The result of the inquiry will be a short film that will be used as new training material within both organisations and to inspire other European organisations to work in similar ways. The film will focus on two Netherlands-based arts initiatives and two Manchester-based arts initiatives, Manchester International Roots Orchestra (MIRO) and CAN Young Artists @HOME. The final film will be showcased at the Welcome to the Village Festival in Leeuwarden in the Netherlands in July 2017 and at a Manchester arts-venue later in the year.
The exchange programme between the two organisations kicked off in August 2016 when CAN’s Digital Arts Creative Producer visited Vrolijkeid in Amsterdam to find out more about the organisation and how it is run. The visit included several trips to refugee and asylum centres in the Netherlands to see the creative workshops Vrolijkeid run there and to meet some of the artists delivering the work. A reciprocal visit took place in October, when Tom Saal, business manager from Vrolijkeid, visited CAN during Journeys Festival and met staff and artists involved in delivering the Exodus programme. Filming of the short film will begin in February 2017.
